It's been a while since I last wrote my thoughts down about my
fitness/weight-loss journey, and that's not because I've lost my
fingers, It's because I've spent the majority of March in bed! That in
itself is an unbelievable feet, I'm only ever in bed for my eight hours
and with 4 year old twins that's not always been possible!
So, when the children brought home the latest virus from pre-school I seemed to be the only one in the house who didn't get ill. For a couple of weeks I was fine whilst the others had searing temperatures and the usual sickness. But then I started to get a cold, which quickly turned very nasty and I was in A&E before I knew it on a nebulizer as my oxygen levels were low and I'd developed a secondary chest infection. Anyway some serious antibiotics did the trick but a week later I got the ear infections of all ear infections and was back in bed!
I managed to get to the gym in between chest infection and ear infection but what I realized was that sometimes you just need to rest your body, it's so important to be in tune with what your body is telling you. Instead of thinking I could solider on I should have waited until I was fully recovered and perhaps I wouldn't have got a further infection. I'm not one for resting, I don't like to accept defeat when it comes to getting sick - I'm a terrible patient and would much prefer to suffer in silence than allow myself to relax and be looked after. I've learnt my lesson. I don't like to admit it but I was poorly and by not listening to what my body was saying I made things worse.
If you're anything like me then I would say don't feel guilty that you're not working or exercising or being the best you can be once in a while - take stock put your feet up and rest, let someone else do the running around.
So what impact did this have on my fitness and weight loss? The change in diet was probably the thing that took the brunt, and not because I was craving carbs or even craving much food, it was due to the fact I hadn't had chance to plan. I didn't know I was going to get that ill that I couldn't even get to the shops or plan all the families meals, so my boyfriend took charge which meant that not all meals were balanced paying close attention to carb, wheat, rice and potato content. I've really seen a huge improvement since removing these things from my diet including, milk and diary. So I was getting cups of tea with sugar and milk in them and lasagna and garlic bread for tea. Whilst this time I wasn't going to make a fuss about the food he was serving I had made a mental note that if this was to happen again, how would I handle it?
So I've started to not only change the way I eat but change the way the family eats and make this transition something we can all do together and all take a bit of responsibility for getting right. I've already written an emergency list of foods that we should always have to hand, that way you can always rustle something up that's well balanced and not heavy on processed carbs. We regularly go shopping together now it used to be just me. Only last week Laurence said he was going to the Fishmongers! I was gob smacked but I can see how this change isn't just about me now it's about all of us and that feels exciting. If my children can grow up from an early age with the knowledge I now have then this makes me very happy, what an amazing grounding and gift to give them. And if Laurence can serve me a plate of fish and veg next time I'm sick then I've helped him to help me, and himself.
So March wasn't that miserable, my Bio-Sig results weren't bad, I'd managed to maintain my weight loss and I know from 'Mission Impossible' that my fitness has improved. So take the nasty weather and germs out of the equation and I've actually learnt a lot. My family has got on board with this new way of eating and I'm confident that we can make changes together as a team and be more successful than if it was just me on my own.
